Review: Fjällräven No. 2 Totepack

July 05, 2017

As a lover of weekend trips, I am constantly on the hunt for bags that are suitable for short getaways. Recently I find myself wanting a backpack that could comfortably fit 2-3 outfits, my oversized laptop, toiletries and extra undergarments, and maybe some snacks. In my search, I stumbled upon Fjällräven, a Swedish outdoor recreation retailer known for making clothing and bags from durable tent fabric. Its flagship product is the Kånken backpack, which is no-frills, functional, and available in a number of sizes.

The "original" Kånken can only be worn as a backpack, so I was more attracted to the "Totepack" which comes in two sizes: I opted for the larger "No. 2" totepack, which is designed to be worn in three ways: on the shoulder, on the back, or in the crook of the arm.
The bag is moderately spacious, with a total volume of 16L, which is solidly in daypack territory, but is woefully insufficient for multi-day trips.

I decided to keep the "No. 2" totepack because I like the convertible-carry concept, the leather reinforced base, and the heavy duty waxed canvas material the bag is constructed out of (the material is water-resistant, not waterproof). The bag has one primary, cavernous compartment secured by top zippers, and also an outside zippered pocket for smaller items.

The Fjällräven Totepack is available in two sizes: the larger "No. 2" reviewed here that retails for $175, and also a "No. 1," which is 12.5% smaller (in volume) and retails for $110.

This bag hasn't gone on sale in the time that I've been tracking its price, but it is included in most storewide promotions (Lord + Taylor is currently running a 20% off storewide sale, and all Fjällräven products are included; use code SALE at checkout. ASOS is also running a tiered sale and the brand is included).

And my search for the perfect backpack for 2/3-day trips continues! Next up is the Osprey Porter 30 Travel Duffel Bag.
