Cape (J. Crew Toggle Cape in Wool-Cashmere Review)

September 28, 2016

I've started every fall in recent memory with a frantic cape search (one that normally comes up empty), but got lucky this season with the purchase of J. Crew's Toggle Cape in Wool-Cashmere (available in two colors).

The material is a medium-weight felted wool; it is substantial, but perhaps best suited for moderate temperatures (40°-70°F), or with warm knits layered underneath for the winter.

The cape's design is utilitarian—none of the details (except for the toggle closures) are merely ornamental: deep side pockets are useful for keeping hands warm and for storing phones and other essentials; hidden buttons secure the cape in windy conditions; and the full-sized hood makes the cape a little more cold-weather friendly.
This cape is only available in one size type and three sizes—XXS/S, S/M, and L/XL. There is little to no difference in overall length, and when worn unbuttoned, the difference between adjacent sizes are negligible. I ordered the two smaller sizes to try (comparison photos below), and kept the smallest (though would've been happy to keep the S/M if that were the only size available).

As I mentioned in an earlier teaser post, I thought the smallest size looked slightly better with jeans on me (I am 5'2), but the S/M worked a little better with shorter skirts.

This cape is on sale for 30% off with code WEDNESDAY until the end of the day, and it is a really great value at this price ($138.60). I can see it becoming a closet staple this fall.

Other picks for the storewide 30% off sale: Wool Sailor Skirt (ordered and loved!), Leather Pleated Skirt, Cable Sweater with Ruffle Sleeves, Gingham Club-Collar Boy Shirt, and Edie Top.

Happy shopping!
