Work Outfits From Last Week

March 19, 2011

I only had time to take pictures of two outfits last week due to overwhelming laziness in the morning. I have been wearing these pants a lot in anticipation of nicer weather which will render them somewhat useless.

Shirt : J. Crew Factory size S
Pants: LOFT Petite Equestrian Wool Lean Trousers size 0P
Belt: J. Crew size S
Shoes: Colin Stuart size 7

And the other outfit incorporated one of my favorite pencil skirts, the lace H&M one that was well received by many petite bloggers. I previously wore it here.

Cardigan : LOFT Ruffle Front Cardigan size XXSP
Skirt: H&M Lace Pencil Skirt size 2
Shoes: Colin Stuart size 7
Notice that it looks a little different here. And no, it's not just your eyes.

Two weeks while devouring a breakfast sandwich (loaded with ketchup, elle styled) I stained this H&M lace skirt with two large red spots. I dealt with the damage right away but just to be safe I also threw it into a mesh wash bag and washed it in the machine against the care tag warnings. To make matters worse I absentmindedly put it in the dryer as well and fried it for 40+ minutes on high heat. It was when I took it out that I realize I may have done irreversible damage.

So the skirt shrank quite a bit and also became less stiff (oops), I didn't take good measurements pre-sandwich-incident but it's a pretty significant shrinkage. My size 2 was larger than the one that other petites ended up with because of H&M manufacturing inconsistencies but is now about the same size but shorter. I am actually happier about the fit now since before I had to pull it over my lower rib because of the length...the skirt does seem "off" somehow after the dryer incident but I can't put my finger on what it is.

Right out of the dryer it shrank nearly an inch across the waist (was barely 11 inches wide out of the dryer) and was merely 19.5 inches long (was 21.5 inches pre-dryer). Thankfully by the time this picture was taken it had relaxed a bit and stretched out to 11.75 inches wide and 20.5 inches long after three wears.

I really should take a class on how to properly wash things.

  2. Oooh new header? Very cute!
That skirt is so pretty. Haha, omg I'm so bad with washing stains and such, too. I'd frantically run it under the tap (which sometimes makes it worse), then chuck it into the washing machine -.-
Blessing in disguise I suppose since you prefer the fit now :)

  3. Gasp, masculine Elle?! The first outfit is so masculine but of course feminine, especially the touch of a nice pink skinny belt.
Aww, at least the skirt is still wearable after the shrinking incident? Where did you wear it before? The link directs it right back to this post. Wow, can't believe the length shrunk two inches!

  4. I like this rolled up pants look. I'll be trying it out myself soon!

Is it the picture or does the skirt's hem look a bit scalloped? (Too much scalloped thoughts on the brain? I think so).

PS - Love this new header! Girly but emo at the same time. I'll also have to say I like the width of this banner better. No horizontal scroll bar on my screen :D

  5. Lisa - thank you! my work outfits are rather unexciting on most days so I appreciate your compliment!

Joey - yes, I am pretty excited about the new header as well. I love washing machines too and almost universally throw everything in there without regard for the care tag.

Hanna - lol, masculine Elle rarely comes out to play. Should Mr. B be alarmed? :D I have nicknamed this skirt the incredible shrinking skirt.

Cee - ooo I think the cropped pants look would work so well on you! Can't wait to see it. And yes it does! I think that's what's weird about it now...before it was longer so the slight flare was more natural looking, post shrink it got funky...

  6. That first look is impeccable! I was never really into cropped pants, but after seeing them styled so chicly on the blogosphere, I need them. Love how you added the pink skinny belt for a girly touch.

  10. I love both outfits Elle and I never would have noticed about the skirt if you hadn't said something. The hem looks just slightly askew and that could be just be a fluke of the picture too. Just like everyone else, I think your new header is adorable!

  13. i love the new header! and the LOFT equestrian pants look so good on you! i'm kicking myself for not snatching one up when i had the chance. and as for the H&M skirt, the fit looks great on you despite the shrinkage. i think the bottom hem looks a little different, but the skirt is still so cute on you!

    cute & little

  14. Ah Hah! I stared at the skirt for literally 5+ minutes going back and forth between the picture and the mention of "H&M" thinking, why is the skirt looking so different? I should've just read your post first. LOL! Wow, the skirt shrank that much? I guess that's good new. Mine (size 4) fits ok, but not perfect. It's way too big on the hip for me. I think I'll try the wash first and then machine dry. I think you scalloped the hem by drying it. It shrank unevenly. Oh well, still looks very nice! I love the way you paired it with the Loft ruffle front cardigan. I have to try this combo sometime myself. I have the blue version of this cardi.
The shirt/pants look is so professional looking that I took a double take. :) You really can pull off a lot of different looks, Elle. Good for you!

  16. I love the first look so much! I wish I could roll up my trousers like that but they are way too fitted on me LOL!

I really would NOT have noticed the skirt shrinkage but sounds like it was an interesting adventure :P

  17. The pants look really good on you! As for the skirt, it looks like it's flaring out a big at the bottom. I'm so absent-minded in terms of randomly throwing items in washer/dryer without carefully checking tags. Sometimes I do it on purpose though because I'm too lazy to handwash or don't want to dry clean haha. Occasionally stuff comes out fitting better though! Like the AT ruffle shells :)
