More ASOS Fail + KFC Hot Wings

January 16, 2011

After going through all the merchandise in five parcels from ASOS (ordered about a month to three weeks ago), I have come to the sad conclusion that I will be more discriminating when browsing ASOS in the future (after my browsing ban). There were some hits (like the shoesand a few dresses) but there were certainly more misses than I had expected.

I didn't take pictures of many of the items that I returned. They were far from satisfactory because the material is incredibly flimsy and the merchandise looks nothing like what was pictured. I have chosen to highlight a bodysuit that I had rather high expectations of. I think the pictures speak volumes about the quality and the accuracy of ASOS stock photos.

The ASOS Boudoir Power Mesh Cut Out Bodysuit retailed for $37.93, WAS on sale for $10.34 at the time of my order but is now $17.24. For those of you who like ASOS and are on a tight budget, I would recommend recording prices by either noting the price in a word document or saving the item in your wishlist (it will tell you how the price has changed since it was placed in your cart - however, ASOS does change the price quite often so it's hard to tell if they've increased the price in anticipation of a coupon).

I am in disbelief that they would price this bodysuit at $37.93, personally I wouldn't pay more than $3 for this. On the model it would appear that only the sides were sheer but in real life the entire thing was see through and very uncomfortable to wear. There was no indication or information on the ASOS website that would lead you to think that the stock photos were altered or that the model is wearing very specific undergarments to hide the fact that this bodysuit is entirely sheer.

I am sorry you have to see my bra (I purposefully chose one that covers a lot of area) but I am trying to make a point about the sheerness.

I also ordered it in blue, and I hope this picture is a better representation of what this looks like in real life.
Even if I wasn't on a ban, I would stay away from ASOS clothing for a while. I might still order shoes and accessories from them because I haven't encountered issues in those departments but I really really encourage ASOS to use photographs that are more representative of what the products are like in real life. I commend them for offering free shipping and free returns but, as someone who hates doing returns and will only consider returns when things are grossly misrepresented, they are losing quite a bit of money on a customer who would have otherwise been a profitable one.

I do have two more ASOS posts in the works - but those are mostly positive so I thought I'd do a post that highlights the downside too.

And on a higher note, I finally tried KFC Hot Wings today (I keep seeing commercials on TV).

The wings were fairly small and there wasn't much heat. For those of your with discriminating palates I would stay away. They were only $3 for 5 so no big loss. Pizza Hut has $0.50 wings on Wednesdays (at least in my area) and those are definitely more value for your money.

And one of my favorites from KFC - the small but cheap KFC Snackers ($0.99 plus tax). They are really great snacks - only takes about three to keep me happy between meals.
Fast food tastes better than they look. Don't they?!

  1. Mmm the wings look so yum. I haven't had KFC in ages! The bodysuit looks so different compared to their stock photo..it's ridiculous! I haven't had too many problems with ASOS ever since ordering from their petite line, but I did send a whole order back once because everything was too big. Shipping to the UK was ridiculously expensive. I wish I lived in the States. Every site seems to offer free or cheaper shipping and/or returns to you guys. :(

  2. I've been browsing ASOS a lot too. I find it helpful to look at the runway videos. You can see the movement of the fabric, which makes a huge difference because their photos lie!

  3. How do you find that ASOS shoes fit? Are they typically a bit smaller than their equivalent in the US (i.e., order 1/2 size up) or are they true to size?

Oh KFC ... I don't think they offer them anymore but they used to have the best honey BBQ wings - so sweet and spicy! I think they come back every now and again but they don't seem like the same anymore!

  4. wow, so unfortunate that you had another bad experience with ASOS. those bodysuits are cute, but you really cannot tell at all that they're completely sheer from the website image. thanks for giving us the heads-up!

    cute and little

  5. Fast food always looks so good in the commercials!...I'm not always disappointed though ;) Really sucks about the bodysuits. I haven't tried ASOS yet, and I'm thinking I'll give them a miss completly. Thanks for this review!

  6. omg, add one more post to the count already in my head of reasons why I shouldn't purchase anything from ASOS.

Have you had any luck w/Karmaloop?

  7. Aubrey - definitely, I think ASOS is not you either. You seem to be drawn to well made and classic pieces and ASOS is just too trendy and flimsy. I am trying to be more discriminating like you! I have had some luck with Karmaloop! They have lots of "trendy" things but the brands they carry aren't too bad. They have Free People and Betsey Johnson which I love. Lots of coupon codes available too - if you are interested I can try to find that site I've used before which has tons of coupons.

Callandra - they do! I think you and Aubrey have equally discriminating tastes so I think ASOS isn't for you either. :)

Kileen - yay, glad this was helpful. I am trying to do more balanced reviews since I am not a total fan of ASOS either - I would hate to have someone stumble upon ASOS and order from them blindly because of one positive review I wrote.

Lisa - I have only order boots from ASOS and since they offer only full sizes (no half sizes to the best of my knowledge), I usually take the larger size that I wear. It's therefore a tad bit loose - I think the shoes I've ordered so far have been TTS but more often maybe 1/4 size big. I think there is also some discrepancy between the styles so it's a good thing they allow free returns!

Khatu - I started doing that too but for styles like these they don't have videos. I think you are very wise in that regard, I definitely think the videos help! It's deterred me from making unwise purchases.

Jessy - I am thankful that retailers are nicer to people in the U.S. too! I wish they would do the same for you soon! I think ASOS is SO hit or miss so definitely not for those people who hate doing returns!

  8. LOL oh that bodysuit. The model photo is quite deceiving as they must have photoshopped two little somethings out.

I love kfc hot wings! I first had them in a China KFC, and my family back there loves them. They are more popular than their regular fried chicken so they've since become my favorite KFC menu item. Although, Pizza Hut wings have ALWAYS been my favorite growing up. They are simply delicious. We don't have Pizza Hut anywhere here and it's making me sad just reminiscing about them...

  10. The photos are really misleading! Thanks for sharing this - it's good to be aware. Too bad it's so sheer. The bodysuits are really cute!

  11. I like the classic pieces too, sure. but the reason I read your blog is b/c there's a side of me that loves whimsical ethereal pieces too that are ultra feminine. and I like seeing it on you. Plenty of times, I have wanted to buy from ASOS. I like so many things, but I get the feeling that I wont get what I order, just based on some of the reviews I've read from you and other bloggers. So I just admire the pictures.

  12. Hi! I'm new the the petite community but I feel the same way about ASOS. I have bought 3 items from them but have not been impressed with any one. Fabrics are on the cheap side and are quite flimsy. *sigh* Everything does look good on their models, but I think I am over and done with them, even if they have free shipping...
