Keep : Nishe Ruffle Neck Long Sleeve Shirt (Long and Whiny Post Ahead)

January 13, 2011

I am an extremely extreme person, love for me is passionate and at first sight (at least when it comes to clothes). So when I first laid eyes on this Nishe Ruffle Neck Long Sleeve Shirt on ASOS (before my ban, obvi), I couldn't take my eyes off it in spite of the fact that sizes run UK8-14 (usually this kind of sizing runs big). I quickly added the shirt to my cart, and just to be safe checked the quantity remaining. I breathed a sigh of relief when I found out there are several left but at that point it was easily 3AM and I passed out while browsing for other things to add to my cart. I woke up the next morning in a good mood, thinking that I had ordered the shirt before I went to sleep (NOT) and fantasizing all the ways I can wear it only to realize at about mid-day that I never checked out. I wasn't in a hurry though; after all, just the night before all sizes were available and in "safe" quantities. You can imagine my shock when I looked at the page and it was sold out! Not one left. In ANY size. At that point I knew I would have to play the ASOS waiting game*(see below for more). A day went by, then three days, and I had sort of forgotten about it when I thought I'd check for fun only to find one size 8 back in stock! Yes, my size! At that point I didn't want to take any chances, checked out everything else I had in my cart and printed out the confirmation.

Without further adieu, the top that put me through so much turmoil. A hot mess?

 Boyish and Girly
I was somewhat confused about how to wear this top properly...there are buttons for the ruffley flutter flap.

Keeping because it was so darn hard tracking it down.

And a picture of me wearing the 2-in-1 Pussybow Jersey Dress in UK4, I wore the UK6 here. Too small for me, thankfully tiny Jessy happened to be interested in this dress so I'll be passing it on.

*ASOS Waiting Game - those of you who recently ordered or browsed ASOS will know that ASOS started allowing people to "save" items in their cart for two hours in a protected setting. Sort of like Gilt and other sample sale sites that allow you to "hold" items for a specified period of time while you make up your mind. The problem with a store that allows you to both "save" items for two hours (sometimes more, as I've discovered) and do free shipping + returns is that people usually have no incentive to release items into the system. I mean, it's like having your own private fitting party a week after ordering the merchandise. So for those of us who discover items after they've sold out in our sizes it's a game of waiting - it's certain that your size will be returned (at some unknown point in the future) but the question is, will you be around to snatch it up before the next eager shopper comes along?

At the risk of further boring you all, today was epic in that my car got stuck in the snow TWICE. I was literally in the driveway when things took a turn for the worse. So I used a combination of shovel and hands to dig my car out of the snow. Pretty, right? I almost lost some toes in the process but alas the car is safely removed from the cold.

  1. The ruffles on the shirt is so Victorian-like. It looks like it's made of paper. LOL The sleeves are too long and the ruffles too big. I think size 6 might have fit you better, but I say just return it! It's hard to find an occasion suitable for that many ruffles. :P

Thanks Elle! Can't wait for the dress. Just took a look at your measurements. We're just about the same at the waist & hips. You're just a bit taller and have a bigger chest than I do. I hope it fits well! It created that S-shape for Jean and it looks like my top & mid are a bit smaller than hers. *crosses fingers*

    Also, I hate snow+cold. Period.

  2. I'm not a person fan of this top, but you have whimsical style (I use this word so much on here you must hate it lol!) and you stick to what you like yourself and that's what I love about you. I like how the title is "KEEP" and not...to keep or not to keep? ...like mine usually are.

  3. Oh and I left your link on Khatu's blog as soon as I saw that jacket..it looks so different on you two!

  4. I'm the same way! It doesn't happen often, but when I fall hard for something, it's all I can think about! I'm glad you found something like that so early in the year! You're off to a good start!! :) I like the big ruffles on you too - very dramatic! The sleeves and cuffs are a bit too long though. Why don't they have size 6?!

  7. When I read that you're extremely extreme, makes me sooooooooo curious to know what your astrological sign is. you too Annie! it's a bad habit but I love to categorize ppl by their astrological sign, even though I'm not really into astrology myself, but I do admit, I'm a textbook Cancer.

You're really keeping this shirt? Really??

Oddly enough, most of your posts about your ASOS purchases actually turns me off to the site. But thanks for always ordering and having posts to show us if something is disastrous or a new cult favorite.

  8. Jessy - I hope it fits you ok, I think it'll look much less hoochy on you than on me. Was going to drop it off today but have been at the office and probably will be until after the PO closes. I'll aim for tomorrow.

Jean - thanks for leaving the link lol, I am a little embarrassed by my talbots pics (looked terrible on me...Khatu wore it perfectly). And thanks for your support, I do occasionally just give in to my delusional fantasies (like this purchase) but I've already wasted a lot of time chasing it down and I don't want to one day forget how terrible it is and then want it again.

PetiteMom - yay, you don't object to it. Does that mean if you see someone wearing this top out you won't think they are weird? :)

Annie - I know you are! the kind of tenacity you showed chasing down the theory and br tweed dress is incredible.

Aubrey - I am a cancer too (though with the addition of the 13th sign I guess that makes me a gemini). I am not sure what cancers are like (pretty out of touch with astrology myself). I am really keeping it, I know, I can't believe myself sometimes. I think you are turned off by ASOS because every review I write is mostly negative (haha, and rightfully so...ASOS is not your thing Aubrey. You'll always be timeless and not be a slave to trends)

  9. this shirt is a bit extreme but i know you can pull it off. i like the how the little ruffles look like paper folds (origami-ish?). and i had no idea about ASOS's shopping cart holding policy -- good to know although I'm still too scared to buy clothes from that place.

and i'm sorry to hear about having to dig your car outta the snow! at least you still have all toes intact at the end. :)

    cute and little

  10. Wow, the blouse is absolutely stunning! Definitely worth it in my opinion!! I'm trying to force myself not to look at ASOS more than 2 times a day because their free shipping is just TOO tempting! I'm sorry to hear about the snow and your car!! I hope the weather returns back to normal soon!xoxoxoxoo

  11. Extreme top? Yes, but high fashion is extreme. And this top would fit right at home on the runway. It's personally not my style, but I know you'll rock this whenever you wear it, Elle :)

PS - Your whining has nothing on mine. I sound like such a youngest child, but I'm not, haha.

  13. I think it's such a unique top and you can definitely pull it off, but is it possible to have it taken in a little? Oh man, sorry to hear about your car:( Glad that everything worked out! Have a great weekend, Elle! -AB

  15. I love the blouse, though I definitely think a six would have much better suited you. The ruffles look like tissue papers which I adore incredibly. I like the boyish look with it because I think it tones and pops the ruffles compare to the girly version. Perhaps you can try it with a more subdue skirt? I'm imagining a skirt version of the shorts to maintain the ruffles' hotness from all over.

I'm sorry to hear you had a rough day, but I admit, I chuckled a bit at the digging part.

    Hope today is better.

It's hanging in my closet right now- it's SO out of my normal style but I think I like it!
