Cocktail Dress Hour : Marciano Corset Dress

January 18, 2011

My ongoing browsing ban has forced me to retreat further into my cluttered closet but the good news is that I actually found a few more cocktail dresses that have been largely ignored after their first wear; so in my continuing effort to document my cocktail dress collection, they will end up on this blog sooner or later.

I got this Marciano corset dress at an outlet for about half off retail (~$100 after tax) not too long ago. I wore it briefly for a few hours and then into a garment bag it goes.

Marciano corset dresses are a pretty affordable alternative to their Dolce & Gabbana counterparts but the smaller sizes are often gone by the time the dresses make it to the sale section.  This style must have been a bestseller because Marciano keeps releasing variations of the same dress season after season without too many drastic changes to the original design.

The size 0 (unfortunately the smallest size for Marciano) fits me rather decently which means that anyone smaller than me is sized out by this brand. Aney, a Canadian blogger, wears another version of this corset dress really well.

A tad long for me, I think if I can get more ideas for how to wear it for everyday I would get it hemmed two inches. The dress is corset back so it can accommodate a range of waist and bust sizes.

About 30 inches from bust to hem.

Sigh, I am not supposed to be browsing or anything but I love this Carmella Corset Dress (on sale for $85 from $188) that looks like a D&G dress from Spring 2009 that was a hit among actresses.

And today's food porn is one of my old favorites : Panera Bread Cinnamon Raisin Bread.

A whole loaf will last me anywhere between 1-2 days because they are irresistible. I have made french toast using slightly stale PBCRB and they've turned out well. Panera Bread always have little idea cards with various uses for their bread stacked neatly on the table and the one I saw today was Cinnamon Raisin Bread Pudding (I am not into soggy bread so didn't pick one up) but definitely stop by your local Panera Bread if you are interested.

Shhhh, don't tell Delta but I took a few of these portable Nutella packets with me the last time I was at the Sky Club Lounge (I was planning to eat them with pretzels on the plane but I was too passed out on the flight) and they go so well with cinnamon raisin bread.

  1. Wow Aney looked SOOO different just a little over a year ago! :O I really like the colour of your version of the dress. It goes really well with your skin tone and the size is perfect for you!

Bleh...raisin bread doesn't sound too appealing to me because I'm not a fan of raisins. D: Nutella though..that's a different story. I can eat that all day! LOL

  2. elle i love how you wore it. i love the color and how it hugs you. its so sexy. i think i prefer it longer as opposed to the shorter length seen on the other blogger.

  3. elle, you look fantastic in the corset style, I also love love love the color that you have :) Ahh, I miss Panera breads, they don't have a Panera where I live, but I love their cinnamon raisin bagels! so yummm! Yay for food porn! haha I also want to go to walgreens now to check out those ketchup chips I saw you posted a few days ago, I've never even heard of those.

  4. I LOVE raisin bread AND nutella! This is often breakfast at work for me ;)

This dress is so hot and of course you wear it so well! I actually don't mind the length of it on you - it kind of looks nice slightly long and you have the great legs anyway so I don't think it cuts you off at all.

  5. I am in love with all those corset dresses! My favorite is the one on the far right. You bad, bad, girl for tempting me for the millionth time! :p

I agree with you about the length...definitely could be quite a few inches shorter. However, it does not look terribly awful the length it is...just depends what kind of look you want to go for.

  6. I love this dress on you! I think I must repeat myself all the time on your blog :) The color is gorgeous and I love how it fits your torso so well!

  7. I echo Ping. I think the sexiness of the top works well with the longer length. More balanced I think. As always, I think this would look great with a theory blazer over it.

Ahh, nutella. For the longest time I thought they were German! My foreign language teacher in middle school brought that in for us as "German" food, lol.

  8. I like its color a lot and I am glad you picked this one instead of the other three. They are pretty but look too much like lingerie. Sexy!

  9. Wow, that's a HOT dress, Elle! LOVE it! You look great, as always:) Thanks for letting me know about the Willow nude jacket...sigh...why are all the awesome brands in Australia?? Hehe Hope you're having a great week, Elle! -AB

  10. It cracks me up how many cocktail dresses you own...I can't picture you trekking around snowy cold wet New England with all of these dresses. Cocktail dresses are definitely something I am not drawn too - I guess I am too practical to buy things I have no occasion to wear. If I went shopping with you I would be sitting there asking "where are you going to wear that? Put it back!". I can help with your shopping ban.

  11. That's definitely a going out dress! You can probably tone it down for every day wear by buttoning up a fitted cardigan or blazer over the top. It's the color and the corset top that really make the dress pop!

  12. love your dress it's such a gorgeous fushia! i love your blog.. shopping and food my two favorite things!! new follower here.. please check me out sometime!!

  13. I like how you wore it with the black pencil skirt, I actually prefer it that way, wonder if I can just buy the corset top without it looking too much like lingerie..

  14. @lisa Thanks! I'll be checking out your blog shortly. :)

@Petite Mom I think I am going to try doing that, this probably won't get a lot of wear otherwise!

@littlenashua I am the opposite - i am the most impractical shopper I know. I really think you need to move slightly further south so you can go shopping with me and then talk some sense into me. :)

@The Owl's Closet thanks! :) I am sad about the Willow jacket too - if I find it you'll be the first to know!

@Nelah thanks Nelah - I am glad too. I love lingerie inspired dresses but not when they look *too* much like lingerie.

@Cee I was going to try that but was too lazy to reach for the blazer :) Oh man, your foreign lang teacher is so funny. Nutella is italian - the same makers as ferrero rocher! :)

@SewPetiteGal hey, no worries (you don't!). I am the one who sounds like a broken record on your blog but you do have impeccable taste in clothes and your sewing skills are really out of this world.

@Michelle Sorry to be a bad influence :) I think I may get it taken up a bit and see what happens - right now I am leaning toward bagging it for now because alterations are costly!

@curls-and-pearls I can eat this for breakfast everyday too - it's incredible! Haha may I ask what you drink with it? I have been drinking hot cocoa with this but something is off...

@olyvia You are too sweet! yay, let me know what you think about those BK chips. I have been hunting for those delicious chocolates you showcased but to no avail. My brother is on a business trip to a different part of the country and I have asked him to look too! The length we'll go for snacks!

@Ping aww thanks Ping! I think I prefer longer to shorter but I think it can be a touch shorter for sure.

@The Little Dust Princess Doesn't she?!! and I can't believe you don't like raisins! But since you love Nutella I suppose we can still be friends. :)

  15. @FashionableAsians I think you can! Nanette Lepore has these amazing corset tops that are not too sexy and totally office appropriate!

  16. Oh how pretty and sexy!!! You look amazing! You have a great many times have I said that?:)

And Nutella- hubby is obsessed ever since we went to Italy..I don't get it but everyone seems to love it:)

  17. Your dress is slightly different than Aney's dress right? I noticed that the straps on yours doesn't have the holes. One of the different versions you talked about?

anyways, I prefer it shorter, but don't go as short as Aney, b/c it looks hella hooch (in a way that is..."if my newly 19 yr old daughter wore that for her bday, I'd go ape shit on her ass.") =D

and promise me you will not wear a bra that you can see through the back of the corset. Tackilicious. Unless you tied it in a way that covers it.

You're lucky you can fill out these corset dresses/shirts.

    p.s. Color's fantastic.

  18. I love corset dresses and the color is amazing on you! I adore the dress that Petra is wearing! And OMG, I'm obssessed with nutella, I put it on everything! xoxoxoo

  19. You look so hot in that dress. I like your version a lot more than Aney's. Hers is a little too short. I also like the color of your dress too. It compliments your skin tone well. Just many cocktail dresses you own? 100? :)

  20. wow, this dress fits you like a glove and you should definitely wear it more often! i love the beautiful rich color and prefer the longer length actually too. i've never had the guts to wear corsets or corset-style dresses, but you definitely pull it off!

    cute and little
    come join the Color Brigade!

  21. I agree with everyone on this dress...fits you pefectly, you look so hot and it's perfect for your skin tone!! Two very enthusiastic thumbs up. Btw, you might want to give bread pudding a try just once, it really is so amazing!
