Love to Hate : ASOS

November 24, 2010

Back when ASOS started offering free shipping to and free return from the U.S., I quickly jumped on the ordering wagon since my previous orders from ASOS met expectations. This time around though, it took over two months for me to receive my packages and if there is one thing that retailers fear, it's that the customer derives no high from said purchase.

I am not unhappy with the products I received but I do take issue with the extended transit time (and I know the strike in France is partially to blame for the delay, but ASOS would admit no oversight on their part and merely sent out an e-mail saying that packages may be delayed and insisted that I should just be patient). Honestly though, I appreciate that they offer free shipping as they don't have any physical presence in the U.S. However, for a lot of shoppers the buying experience is one that demands instant gratification and ASOS really failed to recreate that experience for me. Not that I am not already eying some of their newer offerings, but I am a little more than hesitant to press the checkout button.

(ASOS started offering free shipping with tracking after this fiasco - I wasn't the only one who complained - so the experience should be improved. I am just a skeptic)

But back to the clothes, I am keeping at least two dresses and a bodysuit from the orders.

The ASOS Mesh Insert Pleat Detail Dress
It looked really cute on the model but merely ok on me and the material really isn't quality but I don't have any similar dresses so for the sake of closet diversity I have decided to keep it. I am wearing a size 6 and it's probably the right size for me except for the fact that I have a rather large rib cage which is almost too big for this dress. Thankfully after some huffin' and puffin' I was able to squeeze the rib cage in without tearing the dress. The rest of the dress fits ok.

Jin-Ja Lace Bow Detail Dress (wearing a size S below)

It was love at first sight. I would have gotten both the navy (seen here) and the pink but when I discovered it the pink had already sold out in size S. Knowing that dresses which came in S, M, or L are often generous in fit, I knew that I was taking a chance ordering but just look at the bow in the front and the lace overlay and the sleeves! Unfortunately it is not very flattering on me but I am determined to make it work! I'll probably get it taken in at the waist and shorten the length just slightly.
I'll save the bodysuit for another post while I ponder the fate of the rest of the purchase. I think a few other petite bloggers also ordered...can't wait to read their posts.

  1. i've come to the same conclusion with ASOS. their shipping and tracking left a bad taste in my mouth , which makes me very hesitant to shop from them again. i will say though that my last order from them only took 2 weeks, which was very impressive by ASOS standards.

i like the first dress on you and it hits just right above the knee. the second one looks a tiny bit awkward, especially around the bust area. but i'm sure with the right additional pieces, you can make it work.

can't wait for the bodysuit review!

as for me, i think i'm gonna stick to ordering accessories from ASOS for now. i'm not a fan of having to worry about fit and mailing back items for a refund. oh ASOS!

  2. ahhh asos. it probably took my package 2 months to arrive too. im also skeptical about ordering in the future. i like my things to come within a few days and this was just way too long.

the dresses look great on you. i wanted to get the first dress too, but they were out of sizes when they had the big sale. :(

  3. Kileen - That's another one of my beefs with ASOS...I hate returning things so will probably just end up keeping everything. 2 weeks wasn't bad, that's about how long it took my first few orders...but I hate waiting so it's still a pretty long time. :)

Ping - me too. I feel like I've already given them my money but my stuff is still in limbo. lol, do you still want the dress now that you've seen it on me (will probably ruin for everyone)? I think it'll be a bit big on you as it is snug on me but better loose than too tight, I guess.

  4. Hum....I am not loving ASOS. I have always been curious but after so many other petites have attempted it- I don't think I am liking it.

    Thanks for the post!!!

  5. My experience with ASOS:

I ordered a cute dress already on sale but the price dropped $3 an HOUR later! They wouldn't do a price adjustment because it 'already shipped'. It was annoying, I know $3 isn't a lot but still! After 3 weeks I asked CS via facebook where my package was, they said it was lost in transit and refunded my money. After 5 weeks, my dress arrived so it was free. I love it but since their CS is horrible, it's not worth it to me.

  6. I am lucky that my two orders are arrived at the decent time (10 days I think). It was a different story for the return. I think it took almost a month for my credit to appear. I like their stuff but if I have to go through so much troubles to have it then it's not really worth it. I do like the first dress on you. I think Jen @ Fromheadtotoe has the same one in burgundy

  7. Man, now I'm even more hesitant about ordering from ASOS. Did they offer anything when you complained? % off next purchase that sort of thing? I know Zappos would've profusely apologized and take all responsibility.

Alright, I think something's wrong w/my eyes again because I think both dresses fit you nicely. The 2nd dress does look a tad bigger in the waist and I understand about shortening the length, but it doesn't look horrible out of the box! With some accessorizing, I'm sure you can make these dresses work :)

  8. I ordered my first ASOS item 2 months ago, a Just Cavalli bag, I was so excited because it was such a deal, but it never came :( I emailed ASOS about my disappointment, and luckily they gave me a full refund. But yeah, after that incident, I too am hesitant in buying from them again.

  10. I honestly thought my ASOS package was lost in transit too, since it has NEVER taken anything that long to get to me in all my years of experience with online shopping :P Luckily it did show up, but like you said by then I was no longer excited about the purchase and didn't even end up taking pictures of anything. Some of the dress had potential, but there was no high so I just snap-decided to return everything except for a belt. I like the first dress on you, but to be honest I'm not really loving the second dress. Maybe it's just because it needs alterations, I think you look much much better in other things! Would definitely be interested to see the "after" pic and the rest of your purchase :)

  11. I haven't ordered from ASOS, but I think the transit time would kill me! I love both of these dresses on you btw, and the bow detail on the second dress is so sweet. I don't mind the length, but I would definitely have the waist taken in for sure.

  13. Cute dresses!! I have been pondering some purchases from ASOS's plus lines, so this post has been very helpful to me!! And two months is just crazy!! That's definitely no fun! Of course, I have trouble waiting the "3-5 days" for orders to arrive from most places! I hope you've had a wonderful Thanksgiving! :)

  14. The mesh dress is really gorgeous on you, I like the scoop neckline it is really flattering. Something really random but I'm Korean and couldn't help noticing..."Jin ja" means "really" or "truly" in Korean. It tickled me so I thought I would share. =0P

  15. Hmm, I didn't see this post in my reader. Strange! I've never had a bad experience with ASOS shipping so far (thank goodness!) but I'm glad you finally got your orders. I really like the first dress!
