The Limited: Sale Items

November 08, 2010

I was the lethal combination of bored and stressed while traveling for work last week when I read on Vicky's blog that the Limited was having a Halloween sale. The entire store was 40% off, including sale items. I haven't been inside any The Limited stores in forever and would usually abstain without trying on brands that I am out of touch with but the discount was too good to pass up. I ended up getting a few items that totaled about $130 (I paid $13 for shipping though, which is normally a deal breaker for me as I refuse to pay shipping when I can go to a B&M store). The items later got further discounted so I am a little sour but I suppose that's the nature of buying things during the holiday season.

I am on a bit of a tweed streak so I couldn't resist the temptation of a well-reviewed feminine tweed jacket and a matching skirt.

On me, it's a bit dowdy but since the entire set only set me back about $60 after discounts but before shipping I think I am keeping it. I am wearing an XS blazer, which is loose in the arms and in the torso (I like the length though). The skirt in size 0 is about 1-2 inches bigger than ideal around my waist but not a terrible fit considering how large some retailers' size 0's are. SewPetiteGal wore the blazer much better here.

I also got this Ruched Sleeve Lace Tee in XS in all three colors offered. I have a weakness for lace but am sorely disappointed by the fit and design...I had such high expectations after reading the reviews but again the positive reviews didn't ring true for me. I knew it was going to be see through but it just doesn't excite. I am keeping them because I hate doing returns and they aren't terrible, but never again.
The white top I am wearing under the lace top is the Reversible Seamless Tank in S (I believe it's only offered in S, M, and L), definitely not for petites (just look at how long it is on me) and the material itself is see through so darker-colored bras won't work with this tank. I am keeping this one because I don't really have a white tunic top to wear under jackets.

I also purchased this belt (Bow Front Corset Belt) thinking it would arrive pre-bowed but it's just a regular belt. I am returning this one (and I never do returns...this goes to show how irked I am) because it's not what I ordered at all. How does one even recreate a bow like this?

It'll probably take me another few years to go back to the Limited as this experience hasn't been pleasant.

P.S. my other complaint is their shipping cost...I know they also own Victoria's Secret so I didn't expect much from them but in case you are unfamiliar, everything comes in plastic bags and they arrive in one of those Economy Savers shipping bags. I won't venture a guess how much it cost them to mail me this package, but it is not $13.

Addendum: I don't mean to be a grinch, I think I am just in a hater mood. I'll probably edit this post when I am less grinch-like. The shipping cost isn't completely unreasonable and the clothes are of decent quality. I think after seeing how nicely things looked on SPG and reading the numerous positive reviews raised my expectation quite a bit...which resulted in this massive disappointment.

  1. Elle, I am sorry to hear that those items didn't work out for you. I was tempting to order a few things after reading Vicky's post too but I was strong enough :) $13.00 shipping is hard to swallow especially your order was over $100.00. Oh well, we learn from mistakes

  2. looks like you had quite the adventure shopping The Limited online. the suit looks really good on you and $60 is a steal! as for the lacy shirt i could see it looking really cute paired with a flirty skirt or something. and good call returning the belt. i can't believe it didn't come belted!!

$13 for shipping is a bit ridiculous. booo...

  3. Oh Elle, so sorry to hear that it didn't work out for you. :( The tweed jacket and skirt look really cute on you though. I'm surprised that you are not very enthusiastic about it. The lace top looks better on you than on the model. I have seen this top before in store and wasn't crazy about the stiffness of the material. I agree the shipping cost is ridiculous.

  4. Vicky - thanks for the sale alert, I know I can always rely on you for good intel. I am not entirely unenthusiastic...I think I am just in a funk. I am sure I'll wake up tomorrow morning, put on the tweed set and feel like a million bucks. :)

  5. I had a less than stellar online shopping experience last week. I ended up having to return 2 of 3 items, and I drove to the stores to return them rather than pay return shipping. You're not a grinch, you're practical.

  6. The tweed blazer and skirt are really cute on their own, but it looks a bit too much while worn together. LOL The lace shirt is cute, but you're right..the design isn't that great. It'd look a bit better if the shoulders weren't so puffed.

  8. Oh I didn't see the matching skirt! Darn it! The tweed outfit looks splendid on you - I really love the look and how the skirt has some added detail. Maybe pair the lace tees with pencil skirts to mask the looseness?

And yes, shipping for Victoria's Secret, Express, and Limited is just ridiculously expensive. I'm spoiled by my free shipping @ BR, Gap, and Old Navy!

  9. Lol! Oh Elle, you're not a Grinch. I was also shopping that sale after seeing Vicky's post on it, but the shipping cost made me drop everything and X-out of the window. With all the stores offering free shipping these days...$13 is completely unnecessary, sale or no sale!

I too had a bow item (forget if it was a belt or a necklace) in my cart, and then I read the fine print and saw that it did NOT come bow-ed. Yet the title was "bow...something" ... how deceiving!

Maybe keep the skirt and return the jacket? The skirt is cute on you but you said it yourself...jacket is a little dowdy on your petite frame.

  10. Oh man, I haven't been to The Limited in ages, either! A store re-opened in a nearby mall, but I haven't been able to check it out. Sorry to hear that the items were disappointments:( I really like the suit above on u. It doesn't look dowdy at all! I especially love how the skirt fits on u. Hehe don't worry, ure not being a grinch. Ure too funny!

P.S. Sorry it took forever to reply to comments. Sigh, internet/laptop problems makes me grinch-like hehe

  11. Lol... I think you're completely justified Elle! I would be in a funk too if I shelled out so much for shipping and the items are underwhelming. I think though, even if you feel like you're "swallowing' the shipping cost, it's still better to return rather than sinking even more money into stuff you don't love. At least whatever money you get back can go towards things you do love! Just my two cents :)

  12. I love the Limited - one of my favorite stores!

The Tweed jacket and skirt is so so so cute! I can see why you are on a tweed kick. They are fab.

  13. PetiteXXS - taking your advice and returning one of the lace top and the belt today. You are right...I do tend to keep them because I feel that I have already spent money on shipping. It's a bad habit

Owl - haha, I have been following your laptop/wifi saga so I completely understand. Glad to know that everything is sort of in order now! :)

PAG - I know! When something is advertised as being a "bow" item I expect them to stay in that shape...I obviously didn't do as good a job as you did reading the fine print but you'd think they'd be more upfront about what one should expect.

  14. I like the tweed jacket and skirt set!! I would TOTALLY wear that!! I don't think it looks dowdy at all! Ugh, I know what you mean about returns! I have ended up keeping some unfortunate online purchases for a similar reason actually! :)
