Cocktail Dress Hour: Alice + Olivia Dress

October 09, 2010

I bought this Alice + Olivia dress on Gilt for (what I remember to be) about 40% off the original retail price. And with most of my Gilt purchases I bagged the purchase before pondering what occasion I would wear it to. The online sample sales have trained to me to process purchases in three simple steps: pick, add, and pay. All three steps are usually completed in under 10 minutes so to say that these purchases are well-researched or stewed over would be a lie. I loved this dress and I still love it but I don't think it's very "me" and I don't think I will ever wear it. In organizing my closet sale I pulled this from the abyss of my closet to reevaluate its role in my closet.

As it stands now, this dress is going in the closet sale but I don't know if I can let it go if it gets bought. I know it doesn't look that great on me but I can't internalize or digest the thought that past loves are better off elsewhere. I wonder if I have hoarding tendencies when it comes to pretty dresses. Sorry to be so glum about this but this closet sale has really exposed my weak spot for dresses. I have no problem letting go of unworn or rarely worn pants or sweaters or tops but when it's a dress it's just sooooo hard.

What would you do, dear readers?

  2. lol elle! i try to stay away from sites like gilt. i feel like every purchase is an impulse one, because you have to make a quick decision. i get too overwhelmed! the worse thing is that you can't get your money back if you change your mind or if something doesn't fit! the dress is very pretty. you should go out to nice dinners so you can wear your pretty dresses!

btw- i bought some stuff from asos too! their sales is so awesome, i couldn't help it. i saw that blue dress, but they only had size 2 in the pink. i definitely like the blue you got better!!

  3. I think its super cute! But I totally love cute feminine dresses like this! Although I've decided that getting rid of stuff is sometimes the right thing to do and just means I get to replace it, so it all works out in the end? Right? I hope you have a great weekend! :)

  5. haha I usually add everything to cart and then filter it out. :P (when I'm not rushed)

The dress is pretty, but it's kind of plain imo. :)

  6. It's a pretty dress but I say let it go, because it gives you a reason to look for something else :O)

  7. I have a lot of trouble letting things go too, even though they don't fit me well or I know I'll probably never have the occasion to wear them. I've heard people say that a trick you can do is to put those things in a box and seal it... if in a few months you haven't wanted or needed to open the box, then sell or donate those items.

  9. I'm still trying to get used to letting go of items I love but don't wear so I feel your pain! But I would let it go to someone who would make good use out of it. Maybe on the AN forum? It will also make room in your closet for something even more fabulous!

  10. I'm one to buy dresses because I like it and figure out when to wear them later. If I don't, when an occasion arises, I can't find anything to wear!! So because of that, I have many dresses that haven't even seen the day of light yet =/

I think you should keep this dress because it's hard to part with it =) There will be other closet sales, right? Re-evaluate again when that times comes because who knows, you might have worn it by then.

  11. This dress is really cute! I think its a go with your gut feeling- if you really think you will wear it and still like it in the future, then you can hang onto it for awhile and if your feelings change, you can sell it then.

  12. Thanks everyone, after a lot of thought I have decided to put it in the blog sale. Who knows, maybe it won't sell. :)

Thanks again for all of your input.

  13. I think you should put it in the blog sale if you don't love it...promise, you won't miss it! There were a lot of things in my sale that I was iffy about (like a Theory dress, one of my early faves) and I hated to part with them...but now I am glad they went to a new home. They will get much more wear that way (hopefully) and you won't miss 'em because you'll have more new purchases : )

  14. Oooh, I am HORRIBLE at getting rid of clothes. I always find myself rationalizing every single thing (too small? someday I'll fit in them again! stained? I can use it for housework!) so I have a closet filled to the brim. Kudos to you for doing the blog sale! I do like this dress with the little peek of netting(?) underneath the skirt portion.

  15. It doesn't sound like your ready to let this cute little dress go....I know how that is. It won't hurt to hang on to it just a little longer 'till your ready. I made the mistake one time of letting some things go before I was ready and have regretted it ever since.

  16. I can totally relate girlfriend. One time I was shopping at Cache, picked up this gorgeous gown, tried it on but decided I probably don't have an occasion to wear it. Saw another girl eyeing the same gown and what do I do? Snatch it up and paid for it. Have I worn the dress? NO. Oh gee.
So honestly, I don't really know what to do in this case especially since I do the same thing. I have this soft spot for full skirts/dresses so I think the dress would look adorable under a swing coat!
